All economic indicators point to another difficult year
By Ruth Miller
The economic crisis has affected all of us in different ways and from all indicators the next fiscal year will be more difficult than the last. When the water starts to dry up at the watering hole, the animals start to look at each other differently. This was the theme of the Massachusetts Superintendents Mid-Winter meeting. The discussion focused on funding for Massachusetts public schools. No one knows exactly what to predict for the upcoming fiscal year, but one thing is certain, it will be more difficult that this year. With all the rainy day accounts dried up and no stimulus money from the federal government, states will have to go it alone to balance their budgets. Chapter 70 is the main source of revenue for many school districts across the Commonwealth. Last year this revenue source was cut by 2% which translates into millions of dollars of cuts in services to local school districts. Chapter 70 is the gorilla at the watering hole now. Everyone wants to hold education at the current funding levels. But as the water get lower even the gorilla will have less to drink. Brace for impact, we have hit rock bottom, when you thought things could not get worse, are all phrases that are being used to describe the upcoming fiscal year. Where is the silver lining? In the strength and perseverance of the American people, when times are difficult we pull together to support and help each other. The disaster in Haiti is a perfect example; support of all kinds from our communities poured into Haiti when disaster hit. Next year will be difficult, but we will overcome the obstacles and be stronger because of the challenges we faced

You are so right, we need to be creative and stop doing things the way we have always done them. Thanks for the message.
You are absolutely correct, Ruth. Challenges and mistakes do make us stronger. Let's hope that people will really get involved to realize their importance in our freedom. Best to you . Frederick
