Why you should do your tax returns yourself

By Ruth Miller

Paying someone else to prepare your tax returns does not guarantee they will be done correctly. You are just as likely to get audited with a tax preparer as you are if you complete the return on your own. In fact if you get audited they may come with you, but only to address how the numbers were put on the page, not the facts behind the numbers.

There are all sorts of adds in the news and on the internet saying "We will do your taxes for free". Ok let’s think about this, if they do all taxes for free how are they making money? Well the answer is they will only do 1040EZ tax returns for free. Everyone else will be charged once they sit down to do the taxes. In addition, the federal government will do 1040EZ taxes for free, all you have to do is go to one of their locations or go online to www.IRS.gov.

If your taxes are more complicated than you will need to buy software assists you in completing them on your own. Almost any tax software will take you step by step through the process asking questions while you complete each form. In addition, all the calculations will be completed for you and a final review will check your return for errors. Finally, the program will electronically file the return for you at no additional cost.

So why pay to have another person prepare your taxes for you when you can save money, electronically file for free and take your time in the comfort of your home?

Good Advice, I've been doing my own since I was 19 years old. It isn't that hard manually. I just recently did mine by using that site and H&R block, it only took a few minutes. I was a bit leery of it to begin with, since I think there should just be a link that says, if you are self employed click here and tada, but it really wasn't hard to do it on the site and it was quicker than penning it all out on two copies.
